Ballet chic

Blame Kanye’s short film Runaway, which put the spotlight squarely on a flock of ballerinas in black tutus, or Natalie Portman’s much-hyped turn as a scarily focused prima ballerina in Black Swan, but I am currently obsessed with all things ballet-related, especially in fashion!

 The Chloé Spring 2011 show presented a relaxed, elegant ballet dancer on her way to practice in some light-filled, shiny-wood-floored studio, wearing her long-sleeved, boat-neck blush top; floaty, sheer calf-length skirt; and updated ballet flats in shiny pale-pink leather. We really love the perfectly knotted bun; it’s a sleek, pretty style that’s been all over the office. Women who were little girls who dreamt of being ballerinas could transfer that fantasy to owning a look from this collection.

National Ballet’s Chroma & Serenade & Emergence

Great for the ballet fan with a limited attention span, this triple-bill program from the National Ballet features three very different works.

Wayne McGregor’s Chroma, a contemporary piece from 2006, is set to music composed by Joby Talbot (including three songs by the White Stripes) and has only previously been performed by Britain’s The Royal Ballet.

Serenade was first seen on stage in New York in 1934, and was the first work created in America by Russian choreographer George Balanchine, who worked for years with the famous Ballets Russes.

Vancouver-based choreographer Crystal Pite’s Emergence caused major buzz when it premiered in 2009 as part of the National Ballet’s Innovation program. Principal dancer Greta Hodgkinson wrote about Pite on her blog last year: “I think she is one of the few choreographers out there today who possess a truly unique voice and I’m finding the movement incredibly inspiring.”

It’s the image of a generation with a strong character, they know what they want and they’re not afraid of showing their own beauty, even though it’s an individual and imperfect beauty. Say goodbye to hairdressing and high heels, we prefer a natural hairstyle and comfortable shoes that let you have fun this night.
Above all, let’s be practically minded. Pick the little black dress up and combine it with some nude accessories, like the hippy millinery and fishnet stockings or softened rock purses and clutches. In textiles, velvet is a good choice for strapless dresses; also other feminine materials like lace or tulle with paillettes in contrast to those elements out of the party issue, or even to those coming from the masculine wardrobe: leather studded jackets and oversized knit sweaters make the look up.

No colour, but plenty of attitude

Giving Pierre Dal Corso the freedom to get creative with three models and some of today's edgiest labels was always going to result in a something brilliant. And that's exactly what happened when Pierre shot this series for 160g Magazine; a striking high-contrast black and white shoot full of movement, shadow and the fantastic styling of Laure Tardy-Joye. Remember Me - Indie Costume Design

I think one of the most creative outlets for fashion designers is costume designing for movies. There is so much that goes into creating a box office success. Since movies visually depict a story, the costume design is vital to the aesthetics and invoking a certain emotion within the audience. In particular, I love the indie art film vibe, and I enjoyed the costume design in the movie "Remember Me" staring Robert Pattinson. I love the way the costumes fit with the cinematography and the colouring always suits the emotions at play. Just take a look to see what I mean...

Sarah Burton’s First Show for McQueen

The most significant show of the entire spring 2011 season is arguably Alexander McQueen, which walked yesterday in Paris. This is the first major runway show for the house since the designer took his own life in February, and his right-hand woman Sarah Burton stepped up to the creative director title. Burton assured the press she wouldn't present a show with McQueen's signature theatrics, which isn't her thing, but she still kept things plenty interesting, sending models down a runway consisting of wooden planks with grass poking through. The nature-inspired show opened with an all white look including pants and a multilayered frock coat. Mini dresses followed, and then out came the major dresses with giant full skirts made of what looked like fake hair. Show Studio tweets the dresses were made of pheasant feathers and golden wheat sheaths. The models' real hair, on the other hand, resembled basket weaving. The shoes were no Armadillos, but they retained McQueen's signature intricacy. Some came with butterflies, and others with what looks like plant fringe. Reactions are still trickling onto the Internet, but Style.com calls Burton "a very worthy successor." Show Studio found it "stunning."

The fashionista took home multiple awards including video of the year, wowed the crowds, and fashion critics, on the red carpet with a gown by the late Alexander McQueen.

Garden Party

The runway of Dolce and Gabbana’s younger and more affordable line in this weeks Milan fashion week, was lined with actual flowers because Dolce and Gabbana’s girls are going to a garden party for Spring/Summer 2011.
